Unexpected connections and Surprising Facts

I didn't plan to write more about Tuesday, but several things happened, worth mentioning. Roland met us at the train station and took us on a drive through the beautiful green countryside north and west along the Rhine River to see his organic vineyard and winery--his retirement hobby. Along the way, as we drove through 800-1200 year old villages  he began talking about the local history and stated that at one time, (centuries ago) Mennonites made up 10% of the area. They were allowed to settle here (fleeing persecution elsewhere) because there was no duke who controlled the region. He hadn't known we have Mennonite roots, just happened to mention this fact.

When Doug told Roland my last name, he said, "Then you came from Switzerland and your name once was Nüssli." True. Again, a surprise.

Finally, at Roland's winery, he introduced us to a young man (20 something )who is part of the 14th generation to run this winery. The family has been at it since 1672! Then he told us that he studied oeneology (wine making) at Fresno State several years ago and while there, he lived in Reedley!

Wine tasting. He is the 14th generation of this wine making family. And he lived in Reedley while studying at Fresno State.

Down this slope, near the two trees on the right, is Roland's vineyard.
