Mennonite Heritage Trail and Le Gros Chêne
We spent the afternoon finding the Mennonite cemetery of Salm. It took a bit of tromping across pastures, but we finally located it. Names included were Gerber, Augsburg, and Schlabach. All the markers had a heart on them.
As it turned out, the cemetery was part of a 6 km long Mennonite Heritage Trail with markers at significant spots. This tree, Le Gros Chêne, or The Big Oak, was planted in 1793 to celebrate the edict by the local Duke that they didn't have to take up arms in the French Revolution. The Duke was also willing to accept their word that they would follow the laws without making them swear an oath.
