Copenhagen / Christiania

I won't do so much talking today, mostly sending pics. I’m tired, but it’s a very good tired. My Fitbit tells me we walked almost 20,000 steps, and that included the equivalent of 300 flights of stairs. We climbed the church tower of  the Church of Our Savior. I made it to the point in the tower where the stairs begins to wind around the outside. Doug made it up the steps to the very top – climbing on the outside of the tower. So this evening, I’m relaxing in our room while Doug set off to find some other interesting Danish architecture. The architecture could make a whole new story/post, but I don’t plan to dig into it here.

(I made it to the railing at the blue dot. Doug got to the top at the red dot.)

So below is a photo dump of Christiania. Briefly, in 1971 squatters took over an abandoned military site and turned it into a very funky alternative community. A local slogan states that “only dead fish swim with the current.” About 900 people live here and they cannot buy/sell property. When someone leaves or dies, the community decides who can move in. It’s as hippy-ish as you can get in this day and age, and so much fun to explore.
